Art Therapy

Art therapy is a mental health profession that integrates psychotherapy, art-making, and the creative process within the therapeutic relationship to enhance the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

Art therapy can be a helpful modality if an individual struggles with traditional talk therapy. Some benefits of engaging in art therapy include improved cognitive and sensorimotor processing, increased self-esteem, resilience, reduced psychological distress, and improved emotion regulation.

Art therapy is facilitated by a professional art therapist or someone that has a master’s degree in art therapy or related field and, if located in the U.S., holds or is working toward an ATR-P, ATR, ATR-BC, and/or ATCS credential.

Individual Counseling

We are trained in providing evidence-based treatment approaches to make progress in treatment. Combined with art therapy or used on their own, these approaches include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Skills Training

We provide DBT skills training groups and RO DBT skills training class. Skills training is psychoeducational, with an emphasis on teaching new skills and fostering a sense of belongingness - you are not alone and there are other individuals willing to learn and work alongside you! Skills training is different than process or support groups, which traditionally involve the group leader or group members asking open-ended questions and looking to others for support, guidance, and validation. Skills training is a structured group consisting of a mindfulness exercise, homework review, learning a new skill for the week, and assigning of homework. Groups/classes are usually limited to 6-8 members. Find more on DBT here and RO DBT here.

Telehealth

You have the option to attend session virtually due to schedule limitations, geographical limitations, or meeting preference. All you need is access to internet, a smartphone, computer, or tablet, and a private space to conduct your meeting.

We use a HIPAA/HITECH video conferencing platform for our telehealth sessions.

There are some risks with using telehealth, such as limiting the therapist’s ability to fully identify and assess behaviors and other nonverbal cues normally experienced during an in-person meeting, and the meeting ending prematurely due to internet connectivity issues.

How does virtual art therapy work?

Virtual art therapy is conducted like a telehealth counseling session. In regards to art supplies, a list of art materials will be provided prior to the first session. You have the option to provide your own materials or, for a small materials fee, we can send you an art supply starter kit to use during sessions.

Supervision

CATS provides supervision for individuals pursuing credentials as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) from the Virginia Board of Counseling and a registered art therapist (ATR) from the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).

Couples Counseling

We provide couples counseling utilizing the Dialectical Behavior Therapy framework. We completed training via the Center for DBT and Families to provide DBT with parents, couples, and families. Couples sessions are for couples with at least one individual who has completed a DBT adherent program or has attended DBT skills groups.

Sessions are 75-min in length and are self-pay only. Insurance typically does not cover couples counseling because it is not deemed as “medically necessary.” View our self-pay rates here.
